About PGHF

  • The Foundation became operational in July 1988, when Portsmouth General Hospital was sold to Tidewater Health Care, Inc.  Our existence and mission were not affected by the 1996 sale of the hospital to Bon Secours Health System, Inc.  We are a private foundation not affiliated with any hospital.
  • Our mission is to improve the health, wellness and quality of life of the Portsmouth community through insightful, effective, and coordinated philanthropic grantmaking and collaborations.

  • Our vision is to be a catalyst for maximizing outcomes through community assessment, collaborative development, and focused grantmaking.
  • A Board of Directors selected from the Portsmouth community governs the Foundation.  The Board makes all decisions on proposal funding.  We have 7 Board members who rotate off the Board after 2 three-year terms.
  • The Board awarded its first grant in July 1989.  Since then, the Foundation has awarded over one thousand grants worth more than 17.6 million dollars.

  • The original endowment in 1988 was approximately $7.6 million. The endowment is currently valued at approximately $14 million; this amount varies daily.

Tulio, Full-time cat
Tulio passed away on June 10, 2019.
He served with distinction for 13 years.
He was a sweet boy and will be missed.

Scruffy, Part-time dog
Scruffy passed away on March 20, 2022.
We affectionately called him our Director of Security.
Scruffy was almost 14 years old and was a sweet boy
and a faithful companion who was greatly loved.
We will miss his happy little face and personality!

Izzie, Part-time cat
Izzie passed away on January 15, 2018
at age 14 1/2.
He was a character and always kept
us smiling. He will be missed.
